Healthy Fast Food!

It's official the Holiday Season is here, kicked off in Cincinnati with Macy's Downtown Dazzle on Fountain Square. Saturdays in December on the square are great for the family with the tree officially lit, ice skating, Santa, free trolley rides, fireworks, story time with Mrs. Claus, & more. Be sure to check it out!

With the holidays comes lots of shopping. I love to shop & when I do I'll tell you what I can do some damage! I work hard at finding just the right gift, wearing that plastic card out, & carrying those heavy bags. While I am bouncing around town getting those gifts, I stay bouncy with healthy food. The goal is to give great gifts, not give myself the gift of looking like Mrs. Claus in the process.

1. Bring Along Snacks
  • Trail Mix: nuts, dried fruit, & some candy
  • Protein Bars: 10g of protein or more, try South Beach Bars
  • Protein Shake: bring powder & a shaker or they have individual ones at most groceries
2. Food Court
  • Asian Food: Stick with protein & veggies, go light on the sauce & rice
  • Fast Food: grilled chicken sandwich
  • Sushi: Some malls have sushi stands now
  • Fruit Smoothies: Order a small portion & add protein powder
3. Restaurants
  • A salad with chicken/tuna/white fish & the dressing on the side
4. Energy
  • Coffee: Stay basic with coffee/iced coffee & add a splash of soy or skim
  • Sugar Free Redbull
5. There is a ton of great Shopping Downtown!

6 Pack Now!?!?! How To Get There!

Would you be photo shoot ready in 3 days time, cause that's the advanced notice we all had before Sweat's Wall Mural photo shoot. Photo shoots definitely aren't the norm, but with Facebook it's like having to be photo shoot ready everyday! Facebook is a great motivator to train consistently.

One element of the gym's mural was athletes dripping in sweat. So, I invited 3 great athletic friends of mine to join me in the shoot. Jamie a personal training client of 4 years, Charlie a boot camper, & Eric Conner Mr. Cincinnati Bodybuilding 2010.

We had a blast doing this photo shoot! We just played around & tried to give the artists a variety of great shots to choose from. These were the images that made the cut for the gym walls.

This 6 pack picture.....correction 8 pack picture below didn't make it onto the wall, but was one of my favorites from the shoot. These abs came from a consistent diet and exercise program.

Scott Beseler, the photographer on the shoot & photographer for SoapBox Cincinnati, has a way of not only capturing amazing shots but the personality & life of the moment. This picture captures the image of a top level athlete & Eric's personality. Be sure to Follow him on his road to the IFBB Pro.

It was so great to be surrounded by such fit people at the shoot & to also have them as permanent/everyday motivating images on Sweat's walls.

When you train you might not be getting ready for a photo shoot, but getting facebook photo ready is a great motivator in your training. Facebook is an album of our daily lives & a great reminder to train consistently so we can always look/feel out best. Tips to train consistently:

1. Surround Yourself w/ Motivating People: These are the people who will have similar habits, help you stick with yours, & raise your fitness bar.

2. Train in a Motivating Environment: The vibe of the gym is important, from the decor to the music make it inspire you. The more you are inspired the more likely you will have intensity in your training.....More Intensity = Rapid Progress.

3. Don't Break Up w/ The GYM: Some periods of training will be more intense at times based off of the other goals in your life, BUT NEVER EVER take a complete break from training. As long as you are injury free 1 week is the longest break you should take from the gym.

Exercise Plans: Focus On The Goal!

This exact moment will be forever etched in my mind as the greatest moment of Fear during the entire process of opening this location. It was about 3:30am the Friday of the move, I had no sleep, I already trained a full day of clients, still had a full load of morning clients & the 10 hour move to come.

I had gotten to the new location at 11pm & had been laying & hammering this rubber tile all night. I was only this far along 4 1/2 hours later. Robby, one of the wall mural artists was there with me and I was so thankful. I can remember looking up at him, "Robby I am so glad you are here working with me." I sat in the corner completely exhausted & reflected.

Less than 30 days ago I signed the lease on this gym & since that moment I had been working, eating, & sleeping to breath life into this space. For my career there is no laid out rulebook on how to do all the things I want to do, it isn't easy but I like it that way b/c I get to make my own rules. A few rules from my book: 1.) If I want something I will move the earth to make it happen & I want it done yesterday 2.) I am definitely a Dreamer, I have Big/Crazy/Unconventional Ideas that need to become my reality 3.) When I say I'm going to do something my words have weight, it will be done.

My Fear stemmed from the fact that I had worked for years to be able to do this, months to find a location, & I had done everything in my power over the last few weeks to bring my vision together. At that very moment sitting in the gym I wasn't sure if my 3 rules were going to come together b/c this space was definitely not even close to what I had envisioned. I had the weekend to get this gym ready, b/c Monday morning I had a full clientele coming down. After my moment of fear I did what I know works, I went back to work & stayed focused. I finished laying all the tile just in time to run home shower & train my am clients.

Mark Wilson of Partners in Projects & a good friend of mine showed up with a crew rollin' bout 12 deep, they were phenomenal! They broke down the gym & loaded it up in about 2 hours. The move into the gym was the next 8 hours. See of course it's amazing to have a loft style gym on the 4th floor downtown, but it doesn't happen w/o skilled movers breaking down and skillfully loading equipment into a 100 year old small freight elevator.

Friday night all the mats were down & trimmed, & the equipment was completely setup. Friday at 10:30pm, I felt my first moment of relief that the gym was coming together.

The next day I was up early for the Turf install! I had 3 guys install this bad boy in about 4 hours. This definitely was a different picture from 4:30am Friday, a little over 24 hours later it was a massive overhaul.

So during the day the equipment, turf, & staining the floors, & by night the wall mural was going up. I would stop in at 1am to see how the art was coming along and touch base.

By Monday, the earth had been moved.......The Sweat Training that I had been creating in my mind was now a reality!

I see people let Fear tell them that a healthy fit body is this unattainable thing for their life, but it is so attainable! Fear is a NORMAL roadblock that is going to happen on the way to what you want. Don't Focus on the roadblock, Focus on the goal. Have your moment of fear, then focus and get back to work. You have nothing to gain but strength and a better body. Those two things are so invaluable that they are worth every moment of work & every mental battle of fear on the path to get there. It took me years & many moments of fear to create this A-mazing work of art that I get to call my Gym, but I always was willing to do the work & knew no matter how long it took it WOULD happen one day. Changing your body takes time.......keep at it b/c it will happen if you stay focused & always work through the Fear.

Healthy Holidays! Eat The Stuffed Turkey, But Don't Look Like One!

We all want to look good in our Holiday Attire & Thanksgiving is actually a super healthy holiday with the Turkey, Sweet Potatoes (Yum!), Veggies, & Pumpkin. It's the portions, fat & sweet cooking ingredients, adult beverages, all day appetizer eating.....that turns you into looking and feeling like a stuffed Turkey. I don't know about you, but I plan on looking hot in my holiday dresses!

1. Eat Dinner in the Afternoon: The Thanksgiving Meal is the main event so make it that. When I used to host Thanksgiving at my house there were no appetizers. Everyone arrived at Noon and we ate at 1pm. This has so many benefits! Everyone has come with a light breakfast so they are ready to enjoy the food & the company. We would take our time with eating & catching up over the meal rather than eating appetizers all day long. After dinner we would chill & chat around the table, then move around a bit. Later in the evening dessert would come out when we actually had room for it. Spreading the calories out during the day is very very very important, this will have less of an impact than eating dessert right after your meal.

2. Adult Beverages Limit to one drink with Dinner! If you must have limit to one with dinner otherwise leave drinks for Holiday Parties that just have Appetizers. When you are going to have a large Holiday Meal with Dessert the Drinks will a add to the calories, and when the drinks start a flowing you will a eat a more and a more!

3. Cooking Ingredients Swap Out the Fatty/Sweet Ones! Try splenda white/brown sugar, yogurt/olive oil based butter, skim milk, & Spray Olive Oil. This will drastically cut down on the calories of the meal while keepin the goodness!

4. Stuff the Turkey, Not Yourself! You can eat everything just watch your portions. Turkey & veggies should be your larger portions. Limit all the carbs/fats: rolls, sweet potatoes, stuffing, mac n' cheese, etc!

Healthy Snacks! Send A Healthy Bouquet!

So often we celebrate occasions with baked goods......switch it up healthy style! My parents are wonderful about my healthy habits & sent me a Fruit Bouquet the first week of Sweat's Downtown Location. Fruit is definitely a better option than the sugar, flour, & butter baked good alternative. Celebrating the occasion & your health!

Cardio Exercises, Running Drills!

Running Drills are amazing for training your speed, agility, coordination, endurance......basically they make your legs look great! To bring this element to Sweat I again brought the outside in. I started with the city scene of Downtown Cincinnati so why not green grass to train on year round. How Dope is it to sprint by Carew Tower on Turf!?!?

Most gyms for athletes have turf, but there are hardly any gyms that I even know of for adults to train like athletes on Turf........decision made the turf was DEFINITELY A GO! I picked out high quality practice field turf that they use on Pro Football/College practice fields & placed the order.

When the Turf got delivered to Sweat, it literally blocked the whole sidewalk on 7th street......oops. The Equipment Guys researched, delivered, & installed the Turf with perfection!

The result a 73 ft. x 10 ft. Turf Runway for Indoor Urban Boot Camps & Running Drills. NO Turf needed to get some running drills in at home. Here are 5 great running drills you can add to your workout routine:

1. Skipping
2. Sprinting on the treadmill
3. Skipping
4. High Knees
5. Glute Kicks

Fitness Motivation!

Sweat Training has a "Sweat & The Queen City" inspired wall mural to help create the right training vibe in the gym. This gym has the vibe of Urban, Strong, & Sexy. When I was decided on design I went & bought samples & put them up on the massive blank pallet I had to work with.

I was incredibly uninspired! I didn't want some played out design on the gym walls. I wanted to train in a gym that fostered passion & intensity......so I started thinking Wall Mural. I tweeted...Does anyone know of a wall mural artist? Bob Schwarz, a Cincinnatian/Blogger, saw the tweet & contacted HighLevelArt. In my mind I was thinking that I had to find the guys that did the TO/Chad Mural on 75. It was Kismet b/c they were the guys I was looking for......I met them & we started working together immediately.

At Sweat you are surrounded by a massive wall mural of Sweaty Athletes, Graffiti, & Downtown Cincinnati......I am nothing but motivated to train every time I set foot in the gym. Not only is the Gym surrounded by Downtown Cincinnati, but Downtown Cincinnati is in the Gym!

Your home gym should be a place that you want to go and train here are 5 ways to give it a dose of inspiration. AVOID things that distract you from your workout like reading & watching tv!

1. Mirrors
2. Art
3. Update Your Playlist Weekly
4. Inspirational Quotes
5. Photography

Shape Up Your Legs Effectively!

Bad Squats = Pain in the Knees + Less Calories Burned + Slow Leg Improvement

Great Squats = Great Legs + More Calories Burned + No Knee Pain + More Advanced Exercises

Squats are such a cornerstone in resistance training that all Sweat Clients learn how to squat properly the first day that they train with me. Here is exactly how I teach Sweat Clients to Squat.

1. Start sitting on a bench with feet shoulder width apart, toes straight & forward, chin up, chest out, fingers to the side of your head w/ elbows out.
2. Press down in your heels while pressing hips out to stand.
3. As you revers to sit keep a proud stance with your chin up, chest out, & back arched.
4. Start with 3 sets of 15 reps.
